The Portuguese Way.

After the French Way, the Portuguese Way is the one with the largest number of pilgrims today, and it has a long history behind it, dating back to the very discovery of the apostle's tomb. By the XNUMXth century, when Portugal became independent from the Kingdom of Galicia, the route was already consolidated, and during the following centuries, famous people such as Saint Elizabeth, Queen of PortugalThey traveled the road to get to Santiago.

At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, with the creation of the sanctuary of Fátima, the Camino experienced a temporary decline in popularity, due to "competition" from another pilgrimage site in Portugal, but in recent years it has benefited from a revival of pilgrimage pilgrimage, and the work of associations and enthusiasts who have documented its history and marked out the traditional routes. Today, the pilgrim can choose a variety of routes throughout Portugal (along the coast, inland...) to reach Santiago and receive the "compostela".
