One of the best-known legends associated with the Camino is that of
Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a town where, according to the popular saying, "the chicken sang after being roasted". What is the origin of this legend?

According to the story, in the XNUMXth century a German family was making a pilgrimage to Santiago when they decided to spend the night in Santo Domingo. There, the waitress of the inn falls in love with the son of the family, but when he resisted, she falsely accused him of theft.

The son was hanged, and the parents, disconsolate, could not do
rather than pray for him. The surprise happened when the parents, back on the Camino, passed in front of the corpse of his son and he began to speak to them. The parents ran to give the news to the mayor of the city, who was preparing to have dinner at that moment and did not want to be interrupted. The corregidor, impatient, told them: "your son is as alive as this chicken in front of me"... and the chicken jumped and began to sing.

And that is the reason why, since then, there is always a live rooster and hen in the cathedral.
