Atapuerca It is one of the best-known towns through which the Camino de Santiago crosses. Known today above all for its archaeological site, however, an interesting historical re-enactment of the battle that took place in this town in medieval times also takes place every year.

The battle

La battle of atapuerca took place on September 1, 1054, between Ferdinand I, King of León and Count of Castile, And his brother García Sánchez III, King of Pamplona. Both were sons of Sancho III the Greater, King of Pamplona, who on his death divided his kingdom between his sons.
A series of personal quarrels between the two brothers, due in part to King Bermundo III of León's attempt to attack Fernando's possessions and to the military aid given to him by García, caused the two kings to confront each other in 1054 on the plain in front of the Atapuerca Mountains.
The battle resulted in the death of García Sánchez, but the Navarrese army knew how to remain calm and was able to recover his body and take it back to its pantheon in Nájera. On the same battlefield, García's son, Sancho Garcés IV, was proclaimed successor.

The current representation of the battle began in 1996, the result of the initiative of a group of residents of the town organized in the association "Friends of Atapuerca". It has now been declared festival of tourist interest in Castilla y León, and has a medieval market in the town during the day. All the elements used in the recreation, such as clothing, shields, tents... are made by the residents themselves.

This year (2019) the recreation will take place on August 24 and 25. If you are interested, you can go to www.batalladeatapuerca.com .
