HOW TO GET THERE
Before starting the Camino, you have to reach it. Here you will find instructions to reach the most common points from which pilgrims begin their journey.
Remember that, in addition to the means mentioned here, we also offer a TAXI SERVICE for pilgrims that covers most of the places on the Camino.
From Madrid:
- Travel to Pamplona (see corresponding section).
- CONDA (subsidiary of ALSA, Spain's largest bus company) operates a bus from Pamplona to Saint-Jean between March and autumn. This bus also stops in Roncesvalles. The exact dates of operation appear on the ALSA website, in the section "International" (https://www.alsa.es/nuestros-destinos/internacionales): we recommend that you look there for the exact dates of your trip.
From Paris:
- Take a plane to Biarritz, where the closest airport to Saint-Jean is. HOP!, Easyjet y Air France operate daily flights.
- From Biarritz, take a regional TER train a Saint-Jean. Note: the train to Saint-Jean leaves from the station of Bayonne, which is 10 km away. from Biarritz. The traveler can take the train from Biarritz and change at Bayonne, or can take a taxi/bus to Bayonne station and take the train from there. The duration of the Bayonne-Saint-Jean journey is approximately 1 hour.
From Madrid:
- En train. RENFE (the Spanish railway operator) operates several daily trains from Madrid to Pamplona, both AVEs and conventional trains. Travel time is usually approximately 4 hours.
- En bus. ALSA operates buses that travel this line, and leave both from Madrid Barajas airport (from T4) and from the Avenida de América interchange, in Madrid. The journey normally lasts between 5-6 hours, and includes a transfer.
From Madrid:
- En train. As in the case of Pamplona, León is well connected from the capital of Spain. RENFE (the Spanish railway operator) operates several daily trains from Madrid to León, both AVEs and conventional trains. Travel time is usually approximately 2 hours.
- En bus. ALSA operates direct buses that leave daily from Madrid Barajas airport (from T4) to León. The journey normally lasts between 4 and 5 hours.
From Madrid:
- En train. RENFE operates a Alvia train from Madrid to Lugo that stops in Sarriá. The train runs every day, and the trip duration is about 6 hours.
- RENFE also operates a night Train which runs the Madrid-A Coruña route every day except Saturdays, and which stops in Sarriá.
From Santiago:
- The company Monbus (www.monbus.es) There is, from Monday to Friday, a direct bus to Sarriá. The journey time is 2:45, and is taken from the Santiago bus station, in the center.
- If you arrive in Santiago by plane, the Freire Company (www.empresafreire.com) There is a bus that leaves from the airport and goes to Lugo. From Lugo, the traveler can take another Monbus bus to Sarria.
From Santiago:
There is no direct connection. The traveler must first arrive in Vigo (see below) and from there take another means of transport to Tui.
The most convenient way to get from Santiago to Vigo is by train. RENFE operates several regional trains that connect both cities every day. The route lasts about 90 minutes. ATTENTION: Vigo has two train stations (Guixar and Urzáiz); It is advisable to choose a train that arrives at the first of them, since the train that goes to Tui also departs from there.
From Vigo:
- En train. RENFE It operates two daily trains that stop in Tui, in the morning and in the afternoon, and that depart from Guixar station. The journey takes about 45 minutes.
- En bus. The company ATSA (not to be confused with ALSA) operates several buses that operate the route Vigo – A Guarda, and they stop in Tui. The traveler must go to the Vigo bus station and look for buses that leave in the direction «A Guarda».
From Madrid:
By train. Oviedo is the starting point of the Camino Primitivo, and can be reached now in around three hours from Madrid, thanks to RENFE's AVE service, which started operations in May 2024. The pilgrim must take the AVE train in the Chamartín station in Madrid.
From Madrid:
By train. The new RENFE AVE service inaugurated in May 2024 allows you to travel from Madrid to Ferrol in about five and a half hours.
From Madrid:
By train. Pontevedra is the starting point of the Camino Espiritual, an increasingly popular route. The RENFE AVE high speed train service allows you to travel from Madrid to Pontevedra in about four hours.
