HOW TO GET TO SANT-JEAN PIED-DE-PORT

Saint-Jean pied-de-Port is the starting point of Camino Francésand the second most popular spot chosen by pilgrims on this route. There are several ways to get there, which we'll explain below.

How to get to Saint-Jean pied-de-Port

From Pamplona:

ALSA (Spain's largest bus company) operates a bus from Pamplona during peak season. Things you should know about this route:

  • The bus operates between March and August, although the exact times vary depending on the year.
  • The bus departs at 10 a.m. on weekdays, and at 12 p.m. on weekends.
  • The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • The bus also stops at Roncesvalles, another of the usual starting points for pilgrims.
  • The ticket costs €22.
  • The journey starts from the Pamplona bus station, located on Yanguas y Miranda Avenue, s/n.
  • ATTENTION! Bringing bicycles may involve restrictions or an extra charge. The ALSA website states verbatim: «Bicycles are allowed on all international services. own, for the amount of €25, upon prior reservation and payment of the amount.

    Due to space limitations, a total of four items are allowed per car, including bicycles, skis, and surfboards (one per ticket). These items must be in a condition suitable for travel without causing damage to other luggage or bags, and must be packed in a bag designed for transport (boxes are not permitted). For space reasons, we recommend that the front wheel of bicycles be packed detached in the bag.

From Pamplona (out of season)

As mentioned above, the ALSA bus only operates during peak season. During the rest of the year (approximately October–March), the main option is to take a bus from Pamplona to Roncesvalles, and from there, take a taxi or ride-hailing service to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

  1. The local company Artieda Coaches A bus operates between Pamplona and Roncesvalles from Monday to Friday, between September and June. Exact timetables are available on their website. The bus departs from Pamplona's bus station, as does the ALSA bus.
  2. Once in Roncesvalles, you need to take a taxi or VTC. Caminofácil operates a taxi service which covers all points of the Camino, and this is one of the routes where we have service.

From San Sebastian

From San Sebastián, the best way to reach Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is via Bayonne. There are several ways to get to Bayonne:

  • We can take a Flixbus from San Sebastián to Bayonne. The bus departs from the San Sebastián bus station.
  • Alternatively, we can take an Euskotren train to Hendaye. From there, already on the French rail networkWe will be able to buy a train ticket to Saint-Jean Pied-de-Port, which will include the transfer in Bayonne (see section "from Bayonne").

From Paris

The best way to get from Paris to Saint-Jean pied-de-Port is to first get to Bayonne, and from there take the regional train (see below).

  1. Take the TGV high-speed train from Paris (Gare de Montparnasse) to Bayonne.
  2. Take the TER regional train to Bayonne (see section below) "From Bayonne").

From Barcelona

The best way to get to Saint-Jean Pied-de-Port from Barcelona is to first get to Pamplona, ​​and from there take the bus or a VTC (see above):

  1. Take the AVE high-speed train from Barcelona to Zaragoza.
  2. Once in Zaragoza, take the Zaragoza – Pamplona regional express train.
  3. From Pamplona, ​​take the bus or a taxi, as detailed in the section «From Pamplona«.

From Bayonne (France)

Bayonne is the point from which the only train departs to reach Saint-Jean pied-de-Port, line 54 of regional train TERSome facts:

  • There are four trains a day.
  • The train departs from Bayonne station, well connected by the city's public transport.
  • The price of the journey is 12 euros.
  • The journey takes one hour.
