Some time ago we wrote some articles with places that you could not miss on the Camino de Santiago in the northern and French parts... And today we want to do the same with the Portuguese Camino.

Known more specifically as Central Portuguese Way (to distinguish itself from the others), unites Lisbon with Santiago de Compostela. And, on its journey, it draws a line from south to north, from the Portuguese capital, passing through such wonderful towns as Santarém, Coimbra, Porto, Barcelos, Ponte de Lima, Valença do Minho, Tui, Pontevedra and Padrón.

It should also be said that it has become the second path in number of pilgrims, surpassed only by the French Way. Now, although there are many wonderful places along this route, in today's article we want to make special mention of the following six:

1º Santarem

Known as the capital of the Gothic, this beautiful town is one of the places that you cannot miss in the Portuguese Way. The Convent of San Francisco, the Cathedral, enjoying the views over the Tagus at Portas do Sol, the Convent of Santa Clara or the Castle of Almourol, are some of its attractions.

2th Coimbra

It is the third largest city in central Portugal and its university is one of the oldest in Europe. Famous for its university atmosphere, it has some historical buildings worth seeing.

3rd Castro de Santa Trega

As we read on Wikipedia: "Galician castro and an archaeological site that is located in the contour of the Santa Tecla mountain, 341 meters high, in the most southwestern tip of Galicia, in the municipality of La Guardia (Pontevedra) is a privileged place from which dominates the entire contour of the mouth of the Miño.

An Archeology to visit and impressive views of the mouth of the Miño.

4th Cathedral of Santa María de Tui:

This cathedral, built in the XNUMXth century in the Romanesque style, but to which Gothic elements were added, deserves a worthy stop. Its main doorway is considered the first Gothic-style sculptural ensemble on the peninsula.

5 º Saint Mary of Oia

A municipality located on the southern Galician coast, a step away from the Atlantic, and which presides over the pilgrim's route.

6th Bridge of Pontecesures

A bridge on the river Ulla dating from the year 25 BC Cresconio, bishop of Iria and Compostela in the XNUMXth century, ordered the construction of the west towers to defend against the attacks of the Vikings by the river.
