If you have ever visited any of the areas of the the Camino de Santiago, you have traveled some stretch or you have already done all the way, surely you will recognize these three signs that we are going to talk about.

In this way, throughout the entire route you will find the famous yellow arrows, the markers or signaling milestones and the scallop shells. We tell you more in depth what each of them shows:

1º The yellow arrows of the Camino de Santiago

These become the most important symbol to be taken into account by pilgrims and the They accompany you throughout the entire journey. Its main function is to indicate the direction to follow (very important at crossroads). These can be found anywhere, both on the road itself and in many of the villages that it runs through. the road to Santiago.

As a curious fact, comment that the yellow color is due to the contribution of the parish priest of O Cebreiro Elías Valiña, a very important figure at the end of the XNUMXth century.

2º The scallop shells

You can find them in all kinds of constructions (on the facades of religious buildings, etc.), or even on the ground, although it is true that it is more typical to see them in towns. These shells can be seen drawn on the cairns (which we will talk about below) or distributed along each route of the Path. worth noting that the open part of the shell indicates the direction to follow to get to Santiago.

These scallops have become one of the most famous and universal symbols of the Camino de Santiago and the fact that pilgrims carry them covers has already become a classic.

3º Milestones or the milestones of signaling

This is the official signaling and consists of a concrete block with an arrow drawn indicating the direction to follow, as well as a yellow shell on a blue background. It is also common for the kilometers that distance us from our destination to appear, Santiago de Compostela.

These milestones are normally separated by 1 kilometer, but upon reaching Galicia the distance is shortened to 500 meters. And they are normally distributed between the crossroads or on the path itself.
